Starmer and Macron to Lead Paris Summit on Strait of Hormuz Reopening Efforts

Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are set to co-host a high-level summit in Paris this week aimed at intensifying international diplomatic efforts to restore safe and stable navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor that has recently faced heightened tensions and disruptions.

The meeting is expected to bring together key allies and regional stakeholders to coordinate security measures, de-escalate geopolitical risks, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil and trade, which is vital for global markets.

The Middle East Response Committee having its first meeting on Today to consider the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping route vital for global oil and gas supplies.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The summit will advance work towards a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping once the conflict ends.”

Mr Macron has previously said the countries participating in the initiative would work on a “strictly defensive mission, separate from the warring parties to the conflict” which “is intended to be deployed as soon as circumstances permit”.

NATO allies including Britain and France have already said they would not be drawn into the conflict by taking part in the blockade, stressing instead the need to reopen the waterway.

The summit underscores growing concerns among Western powers over the economic and strategic implications of instability in the region, with both leaders pushing for a unified response to safeguard maritime routes and reinforce international cooperation.
